President’s Message

Welcome to the Waikato Ostomy Website.  It is a special privilege to take over as your President.

Our outgoing President/Secretary Mrs Bev Turner deserves any enormous thank you from all of us – for guiding this Society so ably over the last ten years. Fortunately, Bev along with her husband will continue to be members so I will be able to rely on wise counsel.

In taking on the presidency I was charged along with the other members of your new committee to investigate ways to enhance membership.  This is no easy task but with help from Volunteering Waikato and with their ideas we have started on a course to implement a social media strategy. This will be an up-to-date website, followed by a Facebook presence which obviously will be interactive.

I will be communicating with DHB, Stoma Nurse and also having discussions or written contact with the Board of DHB.  This is primarily with the intention of improving information distributed to new ostomates and distribution of the national quarterly magazine.  There are also other matters that with dialogue that I am sure we can improve upon.

We are extremely grateful to Anna Friedlander who has joined us through Volunteering Waikato and will be responsible for setting up our website and Facebook page.  Anna has very kindly offered to pay for hosting our website – an extremely generous gesture.

Jan O’Leary (Jano) has kindly agreed to take on the role of Secretary to at least past the National Conference in August next year, to be held at the Novotel. Thank you Jano for helping us out when the chips are down – very much appreciated.

It is to be hoped that both the online sites when up and running will be helpful, informative and an encouraging support to all ostomates young and old.

Ostomy Societies both at Regional and National level must continue to exist, but we must adapt to a changing social media world.

In closing I encourage everyone at every opportunity to spread the word about the Society and encourage people to join us either as ostomates or as supporters.

Brian Gordon
